It seems like the Trump-era “Remain Mexico” Policy might be ending soon. The Supreme Court has ruled that immigration law allows for Biden to end the policy. The policy required migrants with pending immigration cases to stay in Mexico.

Set by the Trump administration, this policy claimed to keep migrants from taking advantage of the immigration system. They also claimed to keep migrants safe. In reality, it left migrants exposed to the dangers of overcrowded camps. Human Rights First, an advocacy group, has documented over 1500 cases of violence against these migrants.

Between 2019 and 2021, over 68,000 migrants have been sent to Mexico to await their cases. Under 800 have actually been approved for asylum or other immigration help. For the vast majority, the wait and the dangers faced brought them no results.

Biden has been pushing to end “Wait in Mexico” since last year when a judge struck this very initiative down. And this year, a judge struck down Biden’s plan to end Title 42. So this Supreme Court ruling, which came out 5-4, comes as a victorious step in the right direction. Hopefully now it’ll be a simple next step to end the “Remain in Mexico” Policy.
